Self-hosting is not a stripped edition. It is the same twelve layers, the same retrieval engine, the same governance controls and the same MCP server. The production Compose profile enables plan quotas by default. You bring Postgres 16 with pgvector, a machine to run it on, and the operational attention any stateful service needs.
What the hosted service adds is the part nobody enjoys building: Auth0 tenancy, Stripe billing, backups, the status page, the alert receiver and someone whose job it is to notice.

Is there a free trial?
No. We would rather not advertise one we have not built — there is no trial period wired into checkout today. The Free plan is the trial: it is not time-limited, and it runs the same twelve layers and the same 141 endpoints as every paid plan.
What happens when I hit a quota?
A metered request over its current monthly allowance is refused with HTTP 402 and a link to upgrade. There is no metered overage billing. Counters reset at the next UTC calendar month; deleting memories or disabling sources does not refund the current month’s usage.
What exactly is metered?
Three counters per tenant and UTC calendar month: memory creates through POST /v1/memory, completed requests through POST /v1/chat, and new KB source creations through POST /v1/kb/sources, whether their IDs are caller-supplied or generated. These measure operations, not retained inventory. Editing a memory or updating an existing source does not consume another create allowance. Streaming chat and other memory-producing paths do not feed these counters.
Does a plan limit which features I get?
No. Every plan has every capability. The plans differ in monthly operation allowances and support. A plan applies to one tenant; Team does not bundle additional tenants.
Does Team include multiple tenants?
No. Each tenant has its own organization, plan and usage counters. Newly provisioned tenants start on Free; upgrading one tenant does not upgrade another. There is no shared subscription entitlement or pooled quota across tenants. Ask us about provisioning each additional tenant separately.
Can I just run it myself?
Yes, and it costs nothing. The source is MIT licensed and self-hosting gives you the same system. The production Compose profile enables plan quotas by default, so review that configuration before inviting users. You supply the Postgres, the operations and, if you want model-backed summarisation, the provider keys.
Do I need an OpenAI or Anthropic key?
No. With no provider configured, summarisation falls back to deterministic extractive summaries and retrieval to a local embedding model. Providers make it better; nothing stops working without one.
How do I pay, and how do I stop?
Stripe Checkout for monthly or annual, and the Stripe Customer Portal for card changes and cancellation. Subscription state syncs back through a signature-verified webhook, and duplicate Stripe events are de-duplicated.
